Chimpanzees experience strong feelings of love and friendship and need intact communities to survive. In chimpanzees, the "theory of mind" holds true. In other words, these animals are capable of attributing beliefs and hopes to other individuals. Thus, humans are themselves primates, and great apes should be considered "non-human persons." Great apes should be considered guardians of the rainforest, and the forests depend on them as much as they depend on them. Deforestation, which destroys the habitat of rainforest apes, is accelerating: every day, the equivalent of one and a half times the size of Paris in forests disappears from the Earth's surface! Most tropical plants use a mutualistic strategy between frugivores and fruit trees to disperse their seeds. Great apes contribute very effectively to this strategy due to their diets, which are primarily composed of fruit, and their large size.
