I was mid-bite at a small restaurant in Little Italy when the first fire truck screamed by. Minutes later, the street was filled with more than twenty firetrucks in all. I tossed cash on the table, stepped outside, and began taking in the scene. I noticed this firefighter paused for a moment. Graffiti behind him. Radio at his shoulder. Helmet scarred from use. He looked past me with a steady, determined stare. The city felt loud, but his focus was full of intensity, grit, and duty in one glance.
