Oxford: Light & Dark is my ongoing exploration of the city after nightfall. Oxford is often shown in picture-postcard light: gold stone, blue skies, historic buildings and quads. For much of the year, though, the city exists in darkness, lit by its Victorian streetlamps. When the crowds leave, another Oxford appears: quieter, more introspective, and full of details that are easy to overlook. I walk these streets at night with my camera, returning to the same places again and again. The lamplight reveals things slowly: the shine of wet cobbles, a bicycle in a doorway, a figure passing through the frame before disappearing again. What sits outside the light becomes suggestion and mood. Influenced by Brassaï and classic night photography, this is not the Oxford of tourist brochures. It is the Oxford that emerges in stillness, where past and present sit in quiet dialogue. These photographs offer a less-seen side of the city, not polished or staged but quietly alive, reduced to texture, tone and fleeting human presence.
