Studying fine arts, as a photographer I was always fascinated with old paintings. Old masters creating strong moods and dramatic light to tell a story through painting of group portraits. These challenges are a bit tricky for photographers and I am always willing to try, to see what it takes to go to a "next level". Therefore I created a studio series involving several models - like group portraits - typical for old paintings. I tried to create dynamic, dramatic but soft light - like on Rembrandt's paintings, vivid characters touching of grotesque - as on paintings by Brouwer, classical compositions like we can see on Titian canvases, or dynamic interaction between striking characters like on Caravaggio's works. None of these are copies of existing paintings, of course. I just tried to bring the mood, set difficult lighting on so many people together, and create scenes that would fit an old canvas. Group portraits with a twist. After many failed attempts I found a way to creating such lighting and mood. I hope you find these enjoyable - specially if you are familiar with old painting masterpieces.. Images shown here are "The Dentist - homage to Caravaggio", "Anatomy Lesson - homage to Rembrandt" (on which I could not resist a modern light-hearted twist), and "Bacchus, Pan and Ceres" in style of Titian. A small sample from the Painterly series I did a while ago in Victoria, Canada. Thank you to all friends modeling and helping with these photos.
