Nowadays, QR Codes are used everywhere to identify goods and people. And I wonder if the identity of each person is becoming more and more difficult to recognize? Has modern technology blurred the layers of ancient cultures with historical values and imprints of time? The character in the picture is 72-year-old Pwethang who lives in Kanpetlet (Myanmar). She has started having her face tattooed since she was 15. The process took five years to complete and tattooing the eyelids were the worst part of the process. The tattooed Chin women who lives in the remote hills of the Chin State are far more than 70 years old. The tattoos on their faces are gradually disappearing along with tattooing tradition which was abandoned by the Myanmar government since 1960. I took a photo of a QR code and stitched it up with another I took of a woman with a face tattoo in Myanmar to create this concept piece.
