Kaparot is a customary atonement ritual practiced by ultra-Orthodox Jews on the eve of Yom Kippur. This is a practice in which a chicken is waved over a person's head three times while reciting a prayer. This chicken is meant to absorb all the sins of the person who is performing the ritual, and is then given as charity to a poor family—transforming sin into good deeds. More moderate Orthodox people usually perform the ritual with money instead, with the same result—the money is given to charity. Photographed in Bnei Brak, Israel
