When I was printing my new book, Águas de Ouro in Italy, I noticed the way my photos combined on the metal sheets that were left over after the proofs were made. On these sheets, called scarti, meaning scraps in Italian, the photos associate and merge by chance to create new and daring compositions. I took them as inspiration for the project I have been working on during the quarantine. I started thinking about how our way of seeing is always shaped by something we have experienced before, in ways that are unconscious and mysterious. These elusive yet ever present images coexist in our memory and are fundamental in framing our vision. I was intrigued to discover that a principle in physics, the superposition, describes a similar simultaneous coexistence of states at any given moment in time. I then called my new series of photos, where I tried to make these coexisting images visible, 'Scarti’
