In the 18th and 19th century millions of European Immigrants hoped for a better existence in the “New World” of the USA. Ellis Island outside of New York City played a vital role. The new arrivals queued in the immigration hall to get registered and to get the sanitarian check. One can still sense the mixture of moods in the Immigration Hall, which fluctuated between expectation and anxiety. “The warden” shows a guard waiting for tourists and whose uniform would also have suited the officials well, who had to ensure peace and order 200 years ago.
