Known to most as Mount Fitz Roy, in the Tehuelche language, spoken by the nomadic hunters who once occupied this land, the mountain that dominates this range is called Chaltén. The name translates as "Smoking Mountain," due to the clouds that almost always obscure its peak. This morning, though, after nearly a week of waiting, it appeared in all its might and splendor. I could feel the power of the mountain pulsing through me, a feeling and a moment that I have thought about every day since.
