In Japan, it is a tradition to spend New Year's with family and relatives. Some early risers also watch the first sunrise, praying for good luck in the year ahead. Since I was living away from my parents, I didn't have any plans to do anything especially New Year-like. I decided at least to watch the sunrise, so early in the morning, I went to a nearby riverbank with my camera. After waiting for about an hour, nearly freezing, the sun finally appeared, and I took pictures of it. Then the sun had risen, warming both my body and mind. As I turned to go home, I noticed a baseball field right behind me, bathed in the fresh morning sun. The field, which would usually echo with the cheers of games from early morning, was deserted that day. The players also had the day off, probably enjoying time with family in warm homes. I took a deep breath of the crisp air at the field and headed home, hoping that one day I would be able to enjoy the New Year's holidays with my loved ones.
