While photographing a variety of birds feeding along a small body of water in the Brazilian Pantanal, I observed spectacled caimans also feeding on the fish that had concentrated there during the dry season. As I closely observed the caiman's behavior, I noticed that they would catch a fish under the water and then raise their heads above the water to reposition the fish for easy swallowing. This action occurred in a split second. It was a challenge to handhold a 500mm f4 lens while getting constantly bitten by a plethora of deer flies as I waited for the caiman to raise its head above the water. As soon as it did, I pressed the shutter in burst mode with hopes of capturing an impactful image. When I looked at my LCD following the release of the shutter and saw this image of the fish perfectly suspended in midair between the jaws of the caiman with its head surrounded by deer flies and a decent reflection in the relatively still water prior to the body movement creating more ripples, I was elated!
