The Great Argus Pheasant is a spectacular bird with arguably the most beautiful feathers in the world. During courtship, the male will position himself directly in front of the female and invert his wings to create a large dish of feathers that highlight the many "eyes" of those feathers to create an intoxicating visual in hopes of getting approval from the female. In creating the "dish" of feathers, he strategically curls his wings in a way to create a small opening where he can look through to see if the female is paying attention. It happens very quickly and only lasts for a second or two. The challenge is to be in position when he does it and to not have the female obstructing the view. This image was taken during the split-second when the female lowered her head to pick up a grub and I was lucky to be in the perfect position to capture this single frame showing him peering through the small opening at the center of the "dish."
