This project captures the solemn and vibrant ritual of the “Night Patrol”, an essential part of the Qingshan Temple annual festival in Taipei’s Wanhua District. Rooted in traditions brought by 18th-century immigrants from Quanzhou, the ceremony highlights the enduring connection between faith, history, and community. Through a series of evocative photographs, the project chronicles the nocturnal journey of Ling’an Zunwang (Qingshan King), a deity revered for protecting and guiding the community. The images showcase the interplay of shadow and light, the rhythmic movement of ceremonial troupes, and the intricate details of the deity’s palanquin. This visual narrative explores the balance between solemnity and vibrancy, capturing moments that merge the spiritual with the everyday. The “Night Patrol” transcends religious practice, symbolizing cultural preservation in the face of rapid modernization. By documenting the procession’s rich tapestry of tradition and community participation, this project invites viewers to reflect on the evolving role of faith in contemporary society. Each frame encapsulates not just a ritual, but a living heritage that continues to shape Taiwan’s identity, offering a powerful glimpse into the resilience of cultural roots amidst change.
