1. Can you introduce yourself and talk about how you got into photography?
Hey there! My name is Carlos Guevara, but you can call me GVivanco or just Gav. I am a Chilean photographer who loves photographing nature and landscapes. Before that, I was a computer engineer and even did an MBA in finance at the University of Chile. As a mountaineer, I've been climbing for over 45 years now. My photography projects? They span Chile – from North to South and from the Arctic to Antarctica.
Ever since I was a kid, I had a knack for capturing awe-inspiring landscapes around us using photos. It wasn't until recently that I began to develop my skills as a photographer. Today, I realize that the journey is endless. Even though we learn new things every day, there is always more to discover. But hey, the journey starts here. Love something you're passionate about? It's hard to give up. Photography means the world to me. It's not just a job; it's my calling.
2. Where did you study photography?
I learned most of what I know about photography on my own, but I also got a degree from the New York Institute of Photography (NYIP).
3. Do you remember your first shot? What was it?
My memories of the Andes are hazy, perhaps because I was only 12 at the time, and photography had just become my passion. But I'm pretty sure it was my first trip to those majestic mountains, and even then, my trusty little film camera was never far from my side.
4. What equipment do you use?
Having switched from Nikon to Sony, I now find myself armed with a versatile trio of bodies: the compact A6000, the capable A7RM2, and the flagship A7RM4. My lens collection leans heavily toward GM-series excellence, spanning the ultra-wide 16-35mm to the super-telephoto 200-600mm. Among them, the 100-400mm GM reigns supreme as my go-to choice.
5. What do you hope to achieve?
Though challenging, I aim to use photography as a catalyst for good, evoking emotions that inspire people to strive for betterment.
6. What compliment inspired/touched you the most?
The most powerful reward for me is when viewers confess that my art has transported them emotionally and awakened a special within them.
7. What inspires your unique storytelling?
Nature acts as a mirror, reflecting our potential for evolution. Its boundless beauty and resilience urge us to grow, reminding us that within and around us lies the power to become better beings.
8. Congratulations! As the winner of the New York Photography Awards, what does it mean for you and your team to receive this distinction?
Being recognized in my chosen field, a field I am deeply passionate about, is fuel for my ongoing growth, injecting both optimism and energy.
9. Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 New York Photography Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
Driven by a lifelong dream sparked in 2016 by a Cape Horn voyage, I embarked on an epic 2023 journey – an Antarctic expedition aboard Sonabia 2. Culminating in 12 breathtaking days immersed in the majesty of the continent, our month-long voyage from Puerto Williams, Chile, culminating in reaching Vernadsky Base. My 12 photographs for the European Photography Awards capture the essence and beauty of this incredible experience, earning me the thrilling and unexpected Silver Award for all 12 images. A single award would have been a joy, but to have each one recognized is a dream realized beyond imagination.
10. How has winning an award developed your career?
Building on my earlier point, international recognition provides more than just a boost; it provides a valuable platform, and this recognition is greatly appreciated.
11. What was the best piece of advice you were given starting out, by a mentor or your role model?
In photography, the first thing that catches my attention is the composition and the message it carries. Themes are crucial, but I'd rather have a technically imperfect photo that sparks emotions than a technically perfect one devoid of meaning.
12. What advice would you give someone who would like to become a photographer today?
To connect with photography, I've discovered that it's not about imposing your vision on the outside world. Instead, it's a journey inwards, where the true essence of the landscape captures blossoms through the lens of your inner beauty.
13. What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
My journey began with an editing frenzy, a common pitfall in the world of digital photography. Authenticity reigns supreme. My time is better spent exploring and looking for elements that forge a powerful bond between my photos and the viewer.
14. How do you stay in that space of being receptive to new information and knowledge?
Lifelong learning and an open mind to fresh forms of expression fuel my journey. In line with my belief that success thrives on tireless dedication, I strive to consistently push myself beyond mere flashes of inspiration.
