The primary objective of this project is to explore and document the aesthetic qualities of modern industrial architecture through black-and-white photography. This exploration seeks to capture the stark, geometric beauty of these structures, highlighting the intersection of form, function, and visual impact in industrial design. Modern industrial architecture is often overlooked as a subject of artistic photography, primarily due to its utilitarian nature. However, these structures possess a unique visual language characterized by clean lines, repetitive patterns, and a minimalistic aesthetic. The decision to focus on this type of architecture stems from a desire to challenge conventional perceptions of beauty in the built environment. By stripping away the distraction of color through black-and-white photography, the emphasis is placed on the architecture’s form, texture, and contrast, revealing an often underappreciated artistic value. This project is inspired by the works of photographers like Bernd and Hilla Becher, whose typological approach to industrial architecture showcases the power of systematic visual study. Their influence is evident in the choice of subject matter and the approach to composition—aiming for a timeless and almost abstract representation of these structures. The choice of black-and-white further connects to the historic legacy of industrial photography, while also providing a modern interpretation that aligns with contemporary architectural studies. One of the challenges embraced in this project is the ability to transform cold, functional spaces into compelling artistic compositions. By focusing on elements like light, shadow, and perspective, the project seeks to reveal the hidden artistry within these buildings. The process involves exploring various angles, times of day, and weather conditions to find the perfect balance between the architecture’s intended functionality and its unintended aesthetic appeal. The outcome of this project will be a series of high-contrast, black-and-white photographs that capture the essence of modern industrial architecture. These images will aim to evoke a sense of awe and appreciation for the structural and visual intricacies of these often-overlooked spaces. The project will contribute to the broader dialogue on architecture and art, showcasing how industrial structures can transcend their utilitarian purposes and be appreciated as works of art.
