The roots of Theyyam can be traced back to the ancient tribal communities of North Malabar in Kerala, India. Over the centuries, it has evolved into a complex and multifaceted ritualistic art form. The historical origins of Theyyam are shrouded in the mists of time, with its early practices deeply intertwined with the animistic beliefs and folklore of the region. As communities settled and Hinduism took root, Theyyam assimilated and adapted, incorporating elements of the broader Hindu pantheon. The tradition is almost 1000 years old.
