Svalbard - a very inhospitable place for any kind of land mammal, but with a lot of adaptation over the years, the reindeer as well as the Arctic foxes manage to survive the icy, dark, extreme winters on this archipelago. As common as the reindeer are up here, the more difficult it is to find them in winter due to the scarcity of food, for which they travel long distances. A serendipitous moment was revealed to me in my long search for them, this moment when on a pastel coloured evening in the depths of winter my path crossed with a calf and its cuddled, gentle mother - a beautiful moment of maternal love and one I will never forget.
