1. Can you introduce yourself and talk about how you got into photography?
Hey, I'm Didi Hsu. I love art and drawing, so photography's pretty close to that for me. It keeps me in a constant state of inspiration!
2. Where did you study photography?
The internet overflows with photography resources and tutorials. I'll dive in and use my newfound knowledge to elevate my photos.
3. Do you remember your first shot? What was it?
I started with a consumer camera and a spark of interest. As I dove deeper into photography, I actively sought out knowledge to elevate my skills.
4. What do you hope to achieve?
With a camera in hand, I long to discover fresh perspectives and unleash my creative spirit.
5. What compliment inspired/touched you the most?
For me, affirmations hold deeper meaning than compliments. They recognize the creative journey behind my photographs, the heart and soul poured into each shot. That validation of my artistry fuels my confidence as a photographer like nothing else.
6. What inspires your unique storytelling?
My stories flow from capturing people, events, and objects that resonate through the lens. In a way, it's the world's emotional pulse that guides my photography.
7. Congratulations! As the winner of the New York Photography Awards, what does it mean for you and your team to receive this distinction?
My deepest gratitude to the NYPA for honoring my work with the Architecture Photography win. This recognition humbles and inspires me, and I dedicate this achievement to everyone who has supported my journey.
8. Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 New York Photography Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
Entering the NYPA is a chance to gauge my skills and solidify my identity as a photographer. It's a journey of self-discovery, a learning experience that will refine my craft and help me truly appreciate my unique style.
9. How has winning an award developed your career?
My camera is my paintbrush, and the world, is my canvas. I yearn to capture its beauty in a way that resonates with everything, a yearning fueled by the hope of global recognition. Such recognition would hone my craft and deepen my passion for sharing my vision through the lens.
10. What was the best piece of advice you were given starting out, by a mentor or your role model?
To snap powerful pics, remember three things: frame what you see, capture what your heart feels, and always hold onto your "why." Then, let your photos showcase who you are, what you dig, and the gorgeousness you spy through your lens.
11. What advice would you give someone who would like to become a photographer today?
Photography is a unique path for every artist. Follow your passion, keep learning, and watch your vision blossom.
12. What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
Combine your passion for photography with your heart's intuition. Capture what your eyes see, but feel it in your soul. This is how you will create true masterpieces. Then, let your lens be your compass as you explore the world, sharing your unique perspective with everyone.
13. How do you stay in that space of being receptive to new information and knowledge?
My passion lies in exploring a variety of subjects through my photography because it keeps my creative juices flowing and unlocks endless possibilities. This approach also empowers anyone to broaden their photographic horizons and discover countless new avenues for artistic expression.
